First incorporated as a town in 1783, Swansboro takes its name from Onslow County resident Samuel Swann, a Speaker in the North Carolina House of Commons.
Fueled by the booming shipbuilding industry, the port of Swansboro grew throughout the 1800’s. Swannsborough also was the location of the first steamboat constructed in North Carolina. The Prometheus was built by Captain Otway Burns, Swansboro’s most famous shipbuilder. The area prospered until the end of the Civil War.
As the area’s shipping industry declined, lumber and naval stores grew considerably. These stores also declined during the Great Depression. Swansboro, as it was now known, turned to commercial fishing, which eventually became the mainstay of the area’s economy.
World War II saw many Marines stationed at Cherry Point and Camp Lejeune, bringing much needed economic growth to the Swansboro area. Today, this “Friendly City by the Sea” as Swansboro is now known, has managed to retain the quaint charm and quiet character of a colonial port, while maintaining thriving fishing and tourist industries.
Town of Swansboro Vision Statement:
"To Strive For Excellence In Our Government By Projecting Positive Characteristics And Encouraging Community Involvement To Ensure Quality Of Life As We Serve And Protect The People Of Swansboro!"
Swansboro is also the home of the annual Mullet Festival, one of the first coastal seafood festivals in North Carolina.
