Home to the “Expeditionary Forces in Readiness,” Camp Lejeune outside of Jacksonville, N.C., is the home base to the II Marine Expeditionary Force, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Logistics Group and other combat units and support commands. The base with its the supporting community is home to about 150,000 active duty Marines and Sailors, family members, military retirees and civilian employees. Camp Lejeune impacts the local economy with about $3 billion in revenue annually, from payrolls and contracts to build and maintain the structure needed to support Marines.

The burgeoning Camp Lejeune was not always the powerhouse installation that it is today. What was once a tobacco farm and a temporary tent city eventually grew into a 246-square mile facility housing and training our greatest Marines. During World War II, the need for an amphibious training facility came to the fore pending America’s entry into conflict. To respond to this need, the War Department purchased 11,000 acres on the North Carolina coast. In 1942, the base was named Camp Lejeune, in honor of the 13th Commandant and Commanding General of the 2d Army Division in World War I, MajGen. John A. Lejeune.

With its pine forests, streams and waterfront, Camp Lejeune offers a wide array of training environments. This diversity in environment has helped Marines trained at Camp Lejeune to fight wars in Korea, Vietnam and Saudi Arabia. According to the Marine Corps, “The idea of Special Operations Capable Marine Expeditionary Units was born at Camp Lejeune and Marines here continue to make strides toward the future of warfare in such as areas as urban and riverine operations.”

According to the Marine Corps, “Today, as in the past, Camp Lejeune's mission remains the same -- to maintain combat-ready units for expeditionary deployment.” To this end, Camp Lejeune prepares its Marines for on their 156,000+ acre facility, with 11 miles of beach for amphibious training, 98 maneuver areas, 34 gun positions, 50 tactical landing zones, a state-of-the-art training facility for Military Operations in Urban Terrain, and 78 live fire ranges including the Greater Sandy Run Training Area. Several commands based here including Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, II Marine Expeditionary Force, 2nd Marine Division, and 2nd Marine Logistics Group play a vital role in maintaining our nation’s readiness for combat and humanitarian missions.

Supporting these always-ready Marines are services provided by dedicated Sailors and civilians. Primary medical care for service members and their families is provided by the naval hospital. Other services found at Camp Lejeune include childcare, shopping, education, family support, hunting and fishing, dining, boating and swimming. Service members and their families also have ready access to banks, credit unions, libraries, the commissary, fitness centers, and other facilities.

Camp Lejeune is a five-time recipient of the Commander-in-Chief's Award for Installation Excellence. This award recognizes the base on a Department of Defense-level for effectively managing assets and developing quality programs to accomplish the mission of providing expeditionary forces in readiness

BAH (Basic Allowance for Housing) Military Scale

According to the Department of Defense, the goal of BAH or the Basic Allowance for Housing is “to provide uniformed service members with permanent duty within the 50 United States accurate and equitable housing compensation based on housing costs in local civilian housing markets, and is payable when government quarters are not provided.”

Enlisted personnel with or without dependents that are authorized to live off-base are eligible to receive this tax-free housing allowance. BAH is paid on a monthly basis, and varies depending on the E, W or O class and assignment location. The number of dependents is also taken into consideration when calculating BAH.

Both Camp Lejeune and Cherry Point MCCS offices offer courses and counseling for prospective home buyers and sellers. The Department of Veterans Affairs also has guaranteed home loans available to service personnel. Additionally, the VA provides potential buyers with pre-purchase counseling.
